Brown, Raymond Arly "Ray"

Heaven's angels rejoiced as it gained another resident on July 6th 2012, Raymond "Ray" Arly Brown, 94 years 11 months old passed away peacefully at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville, Arkansas. Ray was one of the few remaining people that could say they were born on top of Magazine Mountain. He was born on August 25, 1917 to Tony Austin Brown and Gertrude Greenfield Brown. He was the oldest of nine children born to them. He lived in several different places on the mountain growing up. He walked up and down that mountain "many a time" as he told the story. He hunted and fished all over it, and spent time at his grandparent's (Pet and Ada Beam Brown) house located at Brown Springs on top of Magazine Mountain. In later years when the last school burned on the mountain, he and his parents moved to Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas, where Ray met and married Thelma Geneva Jones. There, he and Geneva raised three sons. Ray was a very hard worker and a peaceful man. He worked at the lumber yard in Waldron for many years where he fired the boiler on the night shift. While working at the lumber yard at night he learned to repair televisions and radios through correspondence training during the day and eventually opened his own business. He worked both jobs for several years. He owned and operated Ray Brown's Television Service in Waldron for many many years. He also had a huge garden every year that he tended to meticulously, and was very proud of it.

Ray is survived by one brother J.R. Brown of Winslow, Arkansas, three sons; Charles Ray Brown and wife Sue of Havana, Arkansas, Kenny Brown of Mansfield, Arkansas, John David Brown and wife Brandee of Waldron, Arkansas, five grandchildren; Susan Brown Jackson and husband Ron of Havana, Arkansas, Russell Brown and wife Rachelle of Dardanelle, Arkansas, Kendall Brown and wife Lisa of Mansfield, Arkansas, Kleif Brown and wife Elizabeth of Mansfield, Arkansas, Kayelynn and Jordyn Brown of Waldron, Arkansas. Great grandchildren are Kristen Jackson Bland and husband Bradley of Belleville, Arkansas, Rachel Jackson Rowe and husband Jeremy of Paris, Arkansas, Alston, Mallory, Caden and Darby Brown all of Dardanelle, Arkansas, Kamara and Kixx Brown of Mansfield, Arkansas, and one step-great-great granddaughter Ember Rowe of Magazine, Arkansas and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife Thelma Geneva Jones Brown, a stillborn daughter Diane Brown, seven of his eight siblings, a daughter-in-law Kay Harwell and his great-great grandchild Ava Elizabeth Rowe. Ray tried to do what was right and treated people kind. While at Mitchell's Nursing Home in Danville, Arkansas, he loved to make a face or a noise to make people stop and smile. His favorite line at the nursing home was, "Come on in and tell us a lie!" His life mattered to many and he will be greatly missed. His legacy and memories will live on forever through his family for generations to come.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday July 11, 2012 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Martin Funeral Home in Waldron, AR. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday July 12, 2012 at Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Waldron with burial at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Boothe, Arkansas under the direction of Martin Funeral Home.
