Compton, Robert C. Bob

Robert C. Bob Compton, 76 of El Dorado, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2005 at his residence. He was born March 27, 1929 in El Dorado to the late Thomas Junius and Virginia Densma Knox Compton. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Hendrix College in 1949 and the University of Arkansas Law School in 1952. He was a former agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.), 1952-1953 and sought the nomination as the Democratic candidate for Governor in 1970. He served as a Special Associate Justice and Special Chief Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court and served as Special Chairman of the Arkansas Bar Association, serving as President 1975-1976. He was a member by Invitation of the American College Trial Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates. He was also the recipient of the Arkansas Outstanding Lawyer in 1988. In May 2004, the University of Arkansas School of Law dedicated a classroom in his name. He received the Award for Excellence from the Arkansas Bar Foundation, Arkansas Bar Association in June 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James Knox Compton and Buford John Compton.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Compton of El Dorado two sons, Robert C. Compton, Jr. and Walter Knox Compton both of El Dorado daughter, Cathleen Villee Compton of Little Rock and four grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, August 8, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church in El Dorado with Dr. Dan Loomis officiating. Burial followed at Arlington Cemetery under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors of El Dorado. Active pallbearers were Drew Hobbs, Floyd Thomas, Jr., Joe Hickey, Walter Cowger, Jamie Pratt, Gene Bramblett, Joe Woodward and H.Y. Rowe. Compton, Robert J.

Robert J. Compton, age 87, of Riviera, AZ. died September 15, in the V. A. Hospital in Prescott, AZ. He was a member of the Seven Day Adventist Church and a native of Yell County. He was a retired Major in the United States Army, a survivor of the Bataan Death March and a prisoner of war for four years during World War II. He was a retired poultry inspector and farmer.

Survivors are his wife, Ava; two daughters, Kathleen Hook of Albuquerque, NM and Helen Lord of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Lucille Bevers of Dension, Texas and Dotts Croft of Malaga, NM. Mrs. Starling Compton, age 72 died in Waco, Texas Sunday, September 4. Mrs. Compton's home was formerly at Wing.

Garland Dale Coney, age 54 of Dardanelle, died Monday at his home in Dardanelle. He was born October 2, 1949 in Dardanelle to the late George Coffey.

Conley, Bertha Banks

Bertha Banks Conley, age 92, of Atkins, AR, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Russellville. She was born October 10, 1910 in Hattieville, AR the daughter of the late Jacob and Matilda Gullett Baughman. She was a Pentecostal.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bill Banks and W. P. Conley and two sons, Berman and Donald Banks.

She is survived by three sons, Bobby Banks of Russellville, Doyle Banks and Jim Banks both of Atkins; three daughters, Billie Sue Latham of Little Rock, Fern Latham of Danville and Patsy Jordan of Morrilton; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Connaughton, George C.

Col. Connaughton Killed In Action- Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Connaughton of Paris were notified Wednesday morning their son, Lieut. Col. George C. Connaughton, 44 years old, was killed in action November 30, 1950 in Korea. Connaughton was born and reared in Paris, graduated from Paris high school, and was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic church. Lieutenant Colonel Connaughton, a member of the First Cavalry division of the Eighth Army, had been in the army 15 years. He left Japan August 1, for Korea with Maj. Gen. Lawton Walker.

Audrey M. Cook, age 87, a resident of Little Rock, AR, formerly of Ola, AR died Tuesday, January 25, 2000 at Baptist Medical Center at Little Rock, AR. She was born on May 8, 1912 at Bluffton, AR to William Ethan Raper and Nancy lee Sinclair. She was a homemaker, member of the Ola Eastern Star 386 and was a member of the Plainview Assembly of God Church and attended the Ola United Methodist Church.

Cook, Claud C.

Ola Man Found Dead In Home - Claud C. Cook, 74, was found dead in his home at Ola on Monday afternoon. He had apparently been dead for less than 24 hours. Cook, who has no close relatives, had not been seen around Ola since last Thursday. When he failed to bring his laundry to Mrs. Ervin Davis on Monday, she had Mr. Davis go to Cook's home to see if anything was wrong. Davis was accompanied by Major John White. They found Cook's body on the floor under his bed. Chairs were overturned and the room was in disorder. Sheriff Earl Ladd and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney C. R. George investigated and impaneled a coroner s jury, who returned a verdict of death due to unknown causes. Examination at Cornwell Funeral Home revealed no cuts or bruises or other evidence of foul play on the body and officers assumed that he died of a heart attack. Delia May Cook, age 90, of Ola, AR died Friday, April 17, 1999 at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville, AR. She was a native of DeQueen, AR and was a daughter of the late Joe and Emilee Hadley Barnes. She was a dietitian and cook in the nursing home field and was a member of the Easter Star and the Ola United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Cook, Jr.

Survivors include three sons, Joe David Cook of Clackamas, OR, John Edwin Cook of Houston, Tx and Daniel Ray Cook of Deltona, FL; two daughters, Juanita Major of Paron, AR and Bernice Duke of Fort Collins, CO; twenty four grandchildren, twenty six great-grandchildren and five-great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dovie Holiman Cook of 6301 Lee Ave. a retired bookkeeper and assistant cashier for the Yell County Bank, widow of J. Elton Cook, died Wednesday. Mrs. Cook was a Baptist Medical Center volunteer with 18,000 accumulated hours, a member since 1918 of the Adah Chapter No. 156 Order of Eastern Star and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

William and Mandy Chandler Maddox. She was a homemaker and mother and member of the First Assembly of God Church in Plainview, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Rufus Banister and Milton Cook; a son, Floyd Banister; brothers, Coniver Maddox, Kinslow Maddox, Hurley Maddox; and sisters, Mildred Godfrey and Joy Hodges.

Harold Edwin Cook, age 92, of Ola, AR. died Friday, January 1, 1999 at the Dardanelle Nursing Center in Dardanelle, AR. He was born September 5, 1936 at Ola to the late Paschal Cook and Noma Maulden Cook. He was a veteran of the Navy and a retired pharmacist. He was a member of the Ola Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret H. Cook.

Cook, John Edward

John Edward Cook, age 75, of Hot Springs, AR died Saturday, April 21, 2001 at a local hospital. He was born July 7, 1925 in Little Rock, AR, the youngest child of Thomas and Effie Welch Cook.

He was the beloved husband of Alice Paddock Cook of the home. They have lived in Hot Springs since their marriage on December 26, 1986. He was formerly married top Marie Denton for 30 years before her untimely death in 1985. They had one child, John Edward Cook, II who lives Danville, AR with his three children, Jason, Jessica and Jamie. He is also survived by a beloved step-daughter, Linda Pearson Bell and husband, C. R. Bell of Maumelle, AR and her children, Shannon Cantrell and Sean Schader and step-son John and wife Sherry Emerson Pearson of Fayetteville, AR.

Upon graduating from Central High School in Little Rock, John served his country during WWII on active duty with the Navy. He then attended Little Rock Junior College after which he embarked on a long career in finance, banking, business and community service. His quiet, affable, forthright personality combined with honesty, integrity and skill put him in great demand at financial institutions here and abroad. He served with the following Branch manager of the Bank of St. Louis, Vice-president of the Commercial National Bank of Little Rock, President of the International Trust Company of Monrovia, Liberia, Vice-president of the Union National Bank of Little Rock, President of the Bank of Glen wood, AR and President of the Caddo 1st National Bank of Glenwood. While in Glenwood he owned and managed a motel, restaurant and convenience store. He was also elected Recorder-Treasurer for that city. While living in Hot Springs, John as served three terms on the Garland County Quorum Court, served as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Area Agency on Aging and an Advisory Committee member of the Hot Springs "Comprehensive Plan". Endowed with wit, gentle humor and storytelling skill, John has made a multitude of friends and will be sorely missed. He served some time as President of the Civilian Club of Little Rock, President of the Ruritan Club of Glenwood, was named "Lion bf the Year" in Glenwood in 1978, Commissioned an "Arkansas Traveler" by the Governor in 1970, has been a member of the BPOE since 1949, and an avid member of the Duplicate Bridge Club of Hot Springs.

Survivors also include several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

Committal will be at the St. Luke's Episcopal Church columbarium in Hot Springs. A memorial Eucharist is planned at the church for Wednesday, April 25th at 3 p. m. followed by a Celebration at the Parish Hall. Rev. Dr. Larry Williams will officiate. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hume Cook and a grandson Jeff Cook; two sisters, Lottie Schouweiler and Sadie Hilliard and five brothers, Charlie, Thelmer, Raymond, Johnny and Sid Scoles.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Wendall and Glenna Cook of Russellville, AR; two grandchildren, Paula Johnson and Bucky Cook of Russellville; three great grandchildren, Justin and Dustin Cook and Vincent Eubanks; a brother, Jessie Scoles of Centerville, AR and three sisters, Bessie Gray, Centerville, Bobbie Bolden, Dardanelle, AR and Clara Geels of New Blaine, AR.

Ruby D. Cook, age 60, a resident of Russellville, AR. died Sunday, October 1, 2000 at St. Vincent's Infirmary at Little Rock, AR. J She was born September, 1940 at Central City, AR to Henry and Helen Decker Await. She married Charles Cook on March 17, 1959 at Appleton, AR. She retired after 29 years with ConAgra Frozen Foods in Russellville.

She was preceded in death-by her parents, father-in-law, Newton Cook; two brothers, Joe Alford Await and Ray Jr. Await; an uncle, Bill Await and a nephew, Jimmy Dean Williamson.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Cook of Russellville, AR; a son, Jimmy Don Cook of Russellville, AR; a daughter, Linda Standridge of Hector, AR; a grandson, Roger Henry Standridge of Hector, AR; a brother, Roscoe Await of Dardanelle, AR; two sisters, Myrtle Williamson of Atkins, AR and Retha Smith of Russellville, AR; her mother-in-law, Hester Reynolds Cook of Appleton, AR and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, October 5, 2000 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Appleton, officiated by Rev. A. E. Bo Coffman. Cook, Vida Masters

Vida Masters Cook, age 87, of Russellville, formerly of Plainview, died Monday, August 23, 2010 at River Valley Medical Center in Dardanelle. The oldest of 11 children of Ted and Mary Alice Coleman Masters, she was born May 5, 1923 in Dardanelle. She was a 1941 graduate of Dardanelle High School. Vida married her high school sweetheart, Floyd H. Cook, Sr. on August 29, 1941 at Dardanelle. She and Floyd raised their family in Little Rock and worshipped with the Barrow Road Church of Christ. She took great pride in her work of "making light bulbs" for Westinghouse Corporation in Little Rock. She very much enjoyed playing the piano and she was a singer in the Sweet Adelines, Little Rock Chapter for many years. She and Floyd returned to Yell County upon their retirement, making their home in Plainview, where she and Floyd enjoyed fishing and camping on Lake Nimrod. Vida was an active member of the Yell County Extension Homemakers and she enjoyed ceramics, and spending time with all her brothers and sisters via email, and while living in Little Rock she was on a bowling league. She was a member of the West Side Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd E. Cook, Sr.; her parents; and a son-in-law, Bill Owens.

She is survived by her two daughters, Joyce Owens, Russellville, Judy Buehrle & husband, Joe, Little Rock; her son. F. E. Cook, Jr. & Anita, Van Buren; 7 grandchildren, Lance and Lex Owens and Amber Sublett, Joe Buehrle, David, Todd and Jason Cook; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 siblings, Ted asters, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ. Mary Benge of Sallisaw, OK, Samuel Alex Masters of Havasu City, AZ, Reba Morris of CA, Pat Fukuhara of CA, Betty Campbell of CA, Shirley Beggs of AZ, Don Masters of CA, Sue Smith of CA, and Janice Gibbs of ID; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral was August 27, 2010 at Humphrey Chapel. Chris George and Bruce Grice will officiate. Burial was at Mt. George Cemetery by Humphrey Funeral Service. Cook, Virgil

DARDANELLE - Virgil Cook, age 91, Dardanelle, died Sunday at Dardanelle Hospital. Cook was the son of the late Hume and Ann George Cook, a retired carpenter and farmer and a member of the Dardanelle Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Millie Cook; two sons, Floyd Cook, Little Rock, and Jim Cook, Oklahoma City; two stepsons, Kenneth and Bobby Taylor, Dardanelle; three daughters, Claudia Brown, Oklahoma City, Ann Sasser, San Bernardino, Calif. and Ruby Scott, Dardanelle; two stepdaughters, Floy Bearden and May Wheeler, Dardanelle; 12 grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, 22 step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Cooke, Vera

Vera Cooke passed away September 19, 1997 at her home near Terrell, TX. She was born in McRay, AR on August 25, 1913, the first of four children born to Edward and Ruby Tharp King. As a young child, she moved with her family to Ola, AR and graduated from Ola High School. She later moved to Pine Bluff, AR where she met and married Lewis S. Cooke and for the past five years Mrs. Cooke had made her home in Terrell with her daughter. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by one daughter, Diane Clements Jones of Terrell; granddaughter, Deana Hall, Mesquite, TX; grandsons, William S. Padgett; Robert L. Padgett and Benjamin Padgett all of Dallas, TX; three great-grandsons; one great granddaughter; one brother, Lloyd King of Russellville; and many friends in both Arkansas and Texas.

Graveside service will be held at the Ola-Sandlin Cemetery in Ola, AR at 10 AM on Thursday, September 25th. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the American Lung Association. Cooksey, Ruth

Ruth Cooksey, age 73, of Rover, AR. died Friday, March 26, 1999 at St. Mary's Hospital in Russellville, AR. She was born in Fall River, Mass. February 10, 1926, daughter of the late George and Emma Corbishley Christophers. She was co-owner and operator of the Rover Exxon before her retirement. She was a member of the Plainview First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Christophers.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Cecil Ray Cooksey of Rover; one son, Richard Douglas Cooksey of Rover, AR; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Craig Richardson of Tonkawa, OK; two grandson, Brian and Chris Richardson of Tonkawa, OK.

Bobby Neal Cooper, age 42, of Havana died Friday, March 11, 2005. He was born April 26, 1962 in Ft. Smith to the late Bob and Joy Cox Cooper. He was a motor patrol for the Logan County Road Department and a member of the Havana First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Montie Cooper.

Cecil C. Cooper, age 79, of Russellville, AR who is loved and will be missed, died Friday, September 22, 2006, at Legacy Lodge Nursing Center. A son of the late John Wesley and Willie Ida Barker Cooper, he was born April 29, 1927, in Altus, AR. He was a United States Air Force and Marine Veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lenora June Cooper, two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Garcia of Perry and Christine Draper of Wilburton, OK; a brother, Billy Ray Hooker of California; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Cooper, Edna Sanner

Mrs. Edna Sanner Cooper, age 83, of Fort Smith, formerly of Yell County, died Friday, January 17, 1986 at the St. Edwards Hospital in Fort Smith. She was a native of Briggsville, the widow of the late Homer Cooper. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Joe C. Cooper of Little Rock; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Maser of Fort Smith. Two brothers, Ernst Sanner and Leo Banner both of Colorado. Three sisters Armanda Mathis and Erma Nation both of Briggsville, and Arebien Payne of Hot Springs; One granddaughter, Mrs. Tim Skinner of Benton.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p. m. Monday, January 20, 1986 at the Briggsville United Methodist Church with Rev. Dwayn Hoppert and Rev. Clifford Myers officiating. Interment was in the Mt. Cooper, Hazel Lewis

Hazel Lewis Cooper, age 99, of Little Rock, went to be with her Lord on Friday, October 30, 2009. She was born on November 4, 1909, in Danville, Arkansas, to the late John and Vergie Herring Lewis. She obtained her Bachelor's of Science degree in Music with a minor in English from Ouachita Baptist University and was a school teacher for the Danville Public Schools and Hughes Public Schools. She was a very successful sales person for Hoover Corporation, where she kept the stock boys so busy they called her "Ms. Hoover. " She then worked for Dillard's for 40 years, where she was very successful and well-known. She was a member of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, Walter M. Cooper; daughter, Nancy Wood; brother, Odell Lewis; three sisters, Maude Wilson, Maize George, and Irene Lewis.

She is survived by her daughter, Fran Cooper; three grandchildren, Walter M. Wood of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Lewis Wood of California, and Margaret Wood of Tennessee; one great grandchild, George Spiro of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a. m., Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at RollerChenal Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Don Cooper officiating. Graveside service will be at 2:00 p. m., at Earl Ladd Cemetery in Danville, Arkansas, on Wednesday.
