Explosion Destroys Bank In Danville Two Men Critically Injured As Explosion Rocks Entire Town - An explosion which destroyed three buildings rocked the town of Danville about 7:30 a. m. Tuesday, critically injuring two men who were in the Danville State Bank, where the explosion occurred. Jim Bill Gatlin, cashier, said that he had stooped to light a butane stove in the rear of the bank, and when he struck a match the building blew up, Joe Nunn, assistant cashier, was working in the front of the bank. Both men were badly burned, but were able to crawl up through the debris of fallen walls and caved in roof to where men nearby could help them out. Floyd Ramey, who was in the Yell County Hardware building next to the bank, received cuts and bruises, but was not hospitalized. The explosion was reportedly heard at Havana and Ola, 10 and 11 miles away, and knocked out practically every plate glass window in the business section within a block of the bank. The Danville Fire Department fought the blaze which followed the explosion for over two hours before bringing it under control. The bank building was completely destroyed, although most records in the vault, all the money in the vault and safety deposit boxes were saved. A small hole had been blown or knocked in the side of the vault and some fire and smoke damage occurred to records. The Yell County Hardware building and stock were almost completely destroyed by both the explosion and fire. The Walter Recreation Parlor was completely destroyed and the Arkansas Dry Goods and Variety Store was badly damaged. Loss to other building was mostly from the force of the explosion, which broke windows and hurled glass into the buildings. Merchants all over town spent most of the day cleaning up debris and boarding up windows. Practically two -thirds of the telephones in town were out of order, but service had been restored to most by Tuesday afternoon. The local national guard unit was called into action to direct traffic and protect buildings without doors and windows, and continued to patrol town Tuesday night. Mrs. Jim Bill Gatlin and Mrs. Bob Pledger, other employees at the bank, had not arrived for work when the accident occurred. John Ed Chambers, president of the bank, was in the hospital. Chet Ray, employee at the recreation parlor adjoining the bank had gone down the street to pay a bill. The wall was blown in on the area where he would have ordinarily been. Other miraculously escaped injury, in spite of the tons of flying glass and bricks all over the main street. The explosion was apparently caused by butane gas which had collected within the building during the night from a leak or open burner. Gas inspectors found the tank, regulator and line into the building without leaks. Nunn, Joe

Joe Nunn Dies Of Injuries Suffered In Bank Explosion- Joseph Foy Nunn, age 58, assistant cashier of the Danville State Bank, died Friday from injuries received in the bank explosion last Tuesday. Mr. Nunn was a native of Logan County, but had lived here since 1920. He had been an employee of the bank for 21 years. He was a Methodist, a Mason, member of the Danville Lions Club and the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War I.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Kate Nunn; three daughters, Mrs. Arnold Bowden of Lebanon, Ohio, Mrs. Joe Jones of Fayetteville and Betty Nunn of Danville and one son, James Nunn of Danville. Nunn, Joseph Foy

A Tribute To Joe Nunn - An article in the November 29, 1956 issue of the Record started out Joseph Foy Nunn 58, assistant cashier of the Danville State Bank, died Friday from injuries received in the bank explosion last Tuesday. Thus ended a 21-year career with an institution that will continue to feel the effects of his personality and character for years to come.

Every customer of the bank knew Joe Nunn and a bank edition without a tribute to him would be out of question. His greeting that was always cheerful, his honesty that was unquestioned and his willingness to put in long, hard hours of work left an indelible impression on the bank's patrons. If you were to ask that average bank patron what comes to his mind when he thinks of the Danville State Bank, more that likely he would answer that it is some of Joes expressions, such as "Just barely there, when he had finished checking a deposit, or That reminds me, as he was about to tell a story, or the way he had of telling you that you were overdrawn without making you mad. His amazing memory of details was common knowledge, and if there was a question about when some happening occurred even if it was 40 years back, he could supply you with the exact date and the relating details. Such things are the small, everyday happenings that seem trivial at the time, but they add up to create a person's opinion, not only of an individual, but of the institution of which he is a part. And so it was with Joe Nunn, the Danville State Bank and the citizens of Yell County. He said he had cleaned and oiled a saw he intended to use and had also oiled a .22 rifle which was found near his body. His wife went out to call him for breakfast and found him lying about halfway up the steps from the garage. A bullet from the single shot .22 had struck him and apparently killed him instantly.
