He enjoyed excellent health his entire life and even walked his usual "mile or two" the day before his death. He never met a stranger and tried to feed all of his neighbors and anyone who stopped by his house. He and Thelma enjoyed gardening and canning to provide for their family and "because it just tasted better." He attributed his good health to eating "real food" not "junk food." He was a "regular feature" Bluegrass singer at the Wednesday morning County Line Sale for more than 30 years. He had an excellent memory, especially for song lyrics.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Thelma Kathleen Craig Martin; their daughter, Bettye Martin; infant great-granddaughter, Kaylee Taylor; and infant great-grandson, Joshua Brancecum; his sisters, Ruby Hunter, Marie Lamb, Hazel Blake, Nora Langley, Virgie Ford and Lillie Kee; and brothers, Robert Martin, John Martin and Floyd Blake.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin (Eddie) and Linda Martin of Pottsville, and Donnie Joe and Teresa Martin of Russellville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Freda and David Cossey, and Denise and Larry Taylor, all of Dardanelle; three brothers, Alvin Blake, Bobby Blake and Paul Blake; a sister, Thelma Mangrum; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, with another great-grandson to arrive in March. He was also survived by his best friend and bluegrass buddy, Doice Horn, of Russellville; and a host of other relatives and friends.
