Lewis, Frank

Tony Sively, reading the paper with Oscar Thacker and Odell Lewis, American and proud of it, and Frank Lewis, 52, estranged from his wife, and proud of Hitler, were grouped in Thacker and Watson's blacksmith shop, Danville, with Johnnie Watson, Saturday morning, when Frank Lewis got hostile over their talk and jumped on Odell Lewis, pinning him to the floor of the elevated platform they were sitting on. Odell, with one arm around and holding down Frank Lewis who was on top of him, reached down, got a hammer on the floor and hit Frank Lewis above the temple, causing a flesh wound. They quit when Johnnie Watson and Tony Sively separated them and Odell told Frank Lewis to come over to the drug store and he would dress his wound, but he wouldn't go, so Odell sent Dr. Tom Couger over to dress Frank's flesh wound. Later Odell, who had blood on his pants, started home down the alley past the blacksmith shop. All the time from when Odell sent Dr. Cowger to dress the wound on Frank Lewis' head, which Frank wouldn't have done, Frank was cursing Odell, and Johnnie Watson was trying to quiet him down. When Odell started by the shop, Frank Lewis, who was in the shop, redoubled his verbal attack. Odell Lewis picked up a part of a wooden plow handle and came toward the shop's south door where Frank Lewis was with a pair of horse shoe nippers, then threw down part of plow handle and again started toward home to change his trousers. When he was 51 feet away, Frank Lewis started calling Odell a yellow bellied son of that no son of a good mother would stand. Odell picked up part of a brick, came back to within 15 feet of Frank Lewis and asked him to not call him that again as he had stood all he was going to stand. Frank called him the same thing again and Odell threw the part of a brick. Frank Lewis fell and was taken to St. Mary's hospital where he died Wednesday night without regaining consciousness. Very little seems to be known locally of Frank Lewis, except he had lived in a trailer near the railroad viaduct near Danville with a woman and a boy who was reported to have gone to Harrison. Later he moved his trailer to near Ranger. From his daughter, Mrs. Scroggins of Mt. View who was the woman that telephoned the hospital to find if amputations showed it to be her father and who attended his funeral, we learn that Mr. Frank Lewis had this daughter, a son in the army and seven other children in California and Illinois. That his folks had not heard from him in two years.

The funeral services were held by Rev. Gene Turner. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,Yell County Record Newspaper, Danville, Arkansas, Obituary was published on Jun 1940)
