Serrell, Verna Etoile (Sue)

Verna Etoile (Sue) Serrell died in Chambers Memorial Hospital December 23, 2009 of causes incident to age. Her passing was peaceful and she was surrounded by family. Sue was born in the family home in the Macedonia community in May 1919. Her parents were John Lovie Sides and Linnie Belle Hall Sides (later Gillum).

In the years that followed, her brother, Waymon Sides joined the family. Times were hard and when Sue (or Etoile as she was known at the time) was 13 years old, her family sent her to Detroit, Michigan, to live with her mother's sister, Mary. She attended Detroit East High. Later she earned her Beauty School certificate and worked in her Aunt Mary's shop. On New Year's Eve 1942, Sue married John Stanley (Jack) Butler, a Canadian citizen. He was a Pilot Officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force. The couple lived at the Prince Albert, Saskatchewan air base. Tragically, he was killed in a training accident in November 1943. She moved back to Detroit to finish out the War years. She always stayed close to his brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Marguerite Butler, who later became God-parents to her daughter, Becky.

In 1947, Sue married Grant J. Serrell who had served in the "Sea Bees" Construction Battalion in the Navy. They made a home in Detroit. Sue was a long-distance telephone operator with Detroit Bell. Grant worked for General Motors. In 1953, a daughter, Rebecca Louise was born to the couple. Within a couple of years, Grant became ill from lung damage received from blasting coral and laying air strips in the South Pacific. He succumbed to lung cancer in 1956. Becky was 3 years old and Sue had been widowed for the second time in her young life. Sue then moved back to Danville to be near her family. Her mother lived in Wing and her brother and sister-in-law Waymon and Joan Sides live here. She joined the Danville First Baptist Church in 1958. She enjoyed teaching the children in Sunday School. Another highlight or her later life was volunteering in the Gift Shop of Chambers Memorial Hospital. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and an infant brother.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Benny Yih of Park City, UT; her brother and sister-in-law, Waymon and Joan Sides of Danville; nieces, Patricia Sides of Spring-dale, Carol Ann Sides of Little Rock; and a nephew, Wayne Sides of Hot Springs.

A memorial service was held at Danville First Baptist Church, December 28, 2009. Mr. Tom Gray officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. De-Wanda Gray and Mrs. Jeanne Baker. The poem "High Flight" was read by Joan Sides. This poem was special to Sue, as it had been written by Pilot Officer John Magee, who was a fellow officer with her husband, Jack. Burial will be with her husband, Grant, at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Troy, Michigan. Memorials can be made to Chambers Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, c/o Pat Pyle, P. O. Box 1746, Danville, AR 72833. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, Yell County Record, Danville, Arkansas; Obituary was published on Wednesday, December 30, 2009)
