Howell, Haynes A., Judge

HOWELL - Judge Haynes A. Howell, son of Jesse and Nancy Howell, was born in Hawkins county, Tenn. August 10, 1818. He came to Arkansas in 1833; came to Dardanelle, Yell county, in 1847, and embarked in the mercantile business, in which he continued successfully until age and infirmity demanded his retirement. January 28, 1848, he was happily married to the sprightly, black-eyed Martha A. Garrettson, who was the pride of his youth and manhood, and the comfort and stay of his declining years, Rev. John C.Parker, at that time a recent transfer from the Tenn. to the Ark. Conference, officiating. He took his bride to his humble little cottage home in the yard of that historic willow, which she in early life set out with her own hands, which grew to such magnificent proportions. The town of Dardanelle at that time was composed of his own and one other family, Mr.George Williams, he too, a merchant. Brother Howell, by untiring industry, rigid economy and business sagacity, succeeded in accumulating considerably property. They were blessed with thirteen children, two of whom died in infancy, the remaining five sons and six daughters, are all grown and have families of their own, save the two youngest, a son and daughter. He joined the M.E. Church, South, 1849 but did not make a profession of religion until 1858, during the first Annual Conference ever held in Dardanelle, Bishop soul, presiding. He took a very active part and was a liberal contributor in building the first Methodist Church in Dardanelle, and succeeded in getting the ready in good trim for the Conference, and was abundantly rewarded for his money and labor, in the salvation of his soul and during the his coming on the banks of "sweet deliverance," and many others whose eyes per chance may fall on these lines will recall many pleasant hours spent with him and his precious family, even Miss Laura Haygood, in her far away China home will not foret the hospitalities extended her and her ???? and private life, that Samuel invited when he stepped down and out of public office and received that still more remarkable answer, that person was Brother Howel "Behold, here I am, witness against me before the Lord, and before his anointed: Whose ox have I taken? Or whose ass have I taken? 0r whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith and I will restore it you." "And they said, thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand." 1 Samuel, 11, 3-4. But he is gone now to stand before that unerring tribunal, where uninvited every act of his life will be criticised. Yes on the 22nd of May, 1897, in the presence of his heart-broken wife and sorrowing children, all of whom were present, except his dear boy, Alfred, whose ill health had driven him to seek a home in New Mexico, after four months lingering sickness,"the busy wheels of life stood still." But thank God he was ready, and so expressed himself time and again. With those who live right there will be no question about their dying right. Heaven's richest benediction upon his disconsolate wife and sorrowing children. S. S. Key Services conducted by Rev. S. S. Key Assisted by Rev. A. E. Holloway Dardanelle, Ark. June 10, 1897 Published in Arkansas Methodist, Issue: June 30, 1897 (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,Yell County Historical & Genealogical Association Bulletin, Dardanelle, Arkansas, Obituary was published on 2003 No. 1, pg. 28-29)
