Cephas Matthews, age 87 of Magazine, died Thursday, April 21, 2005. He was born on September 2, 1917, son of the late Wes and Nancy Ryan Matthews. He was a retired cattle and sheep farmer, member and deacon of Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church for over 70 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Althea Thomas Matthews, a brother Jeff Matthews, sisters, Bessie Monk, and Eula Mae Thomas, nephew, John Thomas, and niece Mary Ann Graham.
Survivors include his son, T.J. Matthews, granddaughters, Michelle and Megan Matthews of Magazine; nieces, Roberta Thomas, Havana, Dorothy Pittman, and Minnie Montgomery, Altus, OK; and a nephew Virgil Thomas, Havana.
Funeral services were held Friday at Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church with Reverend James Isaacs officiating. Burial was held at Blue Mountain Cemetery. Earl Price Matthews, age 83 of Casa, died Sunday, December 30, 2007 at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. Born May 22, 1924 in Owensboro, KY, he was the son of the late Stanley D. and Ida Minta Chancellor Matthews. He was a retired laborer and a member of the Casa First Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Levo Matthews and two granddaughters, Karen Jane Aubrey and Rhonda Michelle Goff.
Survivors include a son, Earl Wayne Matthews, Sr. of Casa; two daughters, Betty Winters of Dardanelle and Mary Jane Goff of Casa; eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were graveside on Saturday, January 5, 2008, at Fitch Cemetery with Rev. Denver Robinson officiating. Pallbearers were Sam Aubrey, Rick Godwin, Larry Fitzgerald, Kevin Winters, Jerry Wayne Allen, Jim Stewart, Earl Wayne Matthews, Jr. Scotty Allen, and. Jerry Aaron. Mrs. Eunice "DA" Holiman Matthews, age 102, of Little Rock, formerly of Ola, AR (Yell County), died at home Saturday. She was the widow of Everett A. Matthews and the last surviving child of the late John Marion and Mary Emily Lofland Holiman of Ola.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James Everett and Mini Matthews of Little Rock; a daughter and son-in-law, Burnelle and Harold Stannard of Woodland, MI; granddaughters and their husbands, Mary Celia and James Johnson of Little Rock, Lorenia and Roberto LiMandri of Hot Springs and Carolyn and Robert Wilkerson of Walnut, CA; grandson and wife, Robert and Wendy Stannard of Danville, CA; great-grandchildren, Everett Matthews "Matt" and Jaime Johnson of Little Rock, Alessandra and Victor LiMandri of Hot Springs, Andrea Coates of Hawaii and Ryan and Whitney Stannard of Danville, CA.
She was born August 14, 1891, at Young Gravelly near Bluffton (Yell County). Her parents were both descendents of pioneer families who settled that area of Arkansas in the 1830's.
She graduated from Bluffton High School and attended Central Baptist College at Conway for two years. She graduated from Yell County Normal College at Danville in 1911. She taught a few "summer terms" in a one-room school house at Fourche Valley (Yell County) and taught third grade in the Ola schools for about ten years. On September 24, 1918, she married Mr. Matthews, who was then Postmaster of Ola, She also worked at the Ola Post Office after her marriage, but with the birth of their first child, she devoted herself to being a full-time wife and mother. During World War II, the Matthews moved to North Little Rock and later Little Rock, where Mr. Matthews was employed as a construction superintendent with Tri-State Construction Co. Though Mrs. Matthews attended church in Little Rock as long as she was able, she maintained her membership in the Ola United Methodist Church. She was a faithful member for many years of the Berean Sunday School Class at the Bible Church of Little Rock and also attended Fellowship Bible Church and Holy Souls Catholic Church.
Services were held in the Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth Chapel by Father John McDougal and the Rev. Richard Sutton. Burial was in Sandlin Cemetery at Ola. Everett Andy Matthews, age 81 of Little Rock died September 29 in a Little Rock Hospital. He was a retired Construction Superintendent, a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Ola United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eunice (Holiman) Matthews of Little Rock; a son, James E. Matthews, Sr. of Little Rock; a daughter, Mrs. Harold Stannard of Terrence, Calif.; two brothers, Edd Matthews of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Frank Matthews of Mayfield, Ky.; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Griffin-Leggett Chapel with the second service at 2:00 p.m. at the Ola Methodist Church by the Rev. Ralph R. Hart. Mary L. Christmas Matthews, age 68, of Casa, AR died Sunday, March 15, 1998 at the Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, AR. She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Bertha Fitch Christmas and attended the Free Will Baptist Church of Casa.
She is survived by her husband, Earl P. Matthew of Casa; a son, Earl W. Matthews of Casa; two daughters, Mary Jane Goff of Conway and Betty Jean Winters of Dardanelle; four sisters, Rachel Gilmore of Russellville, Sarah Rose of Belleville, Pearl Harris of Casa and Marilyn Williams of Dardanelle; a brother, Verlin Christmas of Casa; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas G. Matthews, Jr., age 87 of Danville, formerly of Welsh, Louisiana died Friday, January 7, 2005, at Yell County Nursing Home in Ola. He was born July 3, 1917, in Cushman, AR to Thomas G. and Ida McDonald Matthews. He was a retired small aircraft mechanic and pilot, a World War II veteran, a member of the Episcopal Church, a Mason, and an Order of the Eastern Star member.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Theresa LeBlanc Matthews; an infant brother, Zerel Matthews and a sister, Roe C. King.
Survivors are his niece, Ida Shinn of Danville, AR and his nephew, Dan King of Searcy, AR.
Graveside service was held on Monday, January 10, 2005 at the White County Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Searcy with Rev. Ed Matthews officiating. Arrangements are by Cornwell Funeral Home, Danville. Loyd William Maughn, age 63 of Danville, died Friday, December 27, 2002 at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville. Mr. Maughn was born March 16, 1939 in Danville to the late George Maughn and Marie Power Wehunt. He graduated from Mountain View High School in Mountain View, California where he was a High School Football All-American. Mr. Maughn was the Police Chief for the City of Danville from 1999 to the present; he was the Yell County Sheriff from 1993 to 1998, the chief deputy under Yell County Sheriff Denver Dennis for nine years. He began his law enforcement career in 1964 with the Russellville City Police Department and then moved to Little Rock and served on the Little Rock Police Department for 12 years. He was a member of the Danville First Baptist Church, Fraternal Order of Police, Arkansas Sheriff Association, Arkansas Municipal Police Association, National Police Association, Yell County Cops For Kids. He delivered meals on wheels for the Yell County Senior Citizens for 12 years. He was an avid Oaklawn racing fan.
He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Delena Robinson Knight.

Lucille Maulsby, age 80, of Dardanelle, AR died Saturday, at the Dardanelle Hospital. She was born June 12, 1921 in Minneola, KS, the daughter of the late Edward Jay and Beulah M. Crecelius Waller. She was a retired insurance secretary.
Survivors include, two sons and daughter-in-law, Doug and Vickie Hensley of Dardanelle, AR and Denney Hensley of Ft. Worth, TX; a daughter, Melodie Seamans of Boise, ID; a brother, Randy Slavick of Pampa, TX; a sister, Dorothy Pryor of Mobile, AL; " eight grandchildren, including, Ivee and Ty Hensley, formerly of Dardanelle, AR and eight great-grandchildren.

James L. Maupin, M. D. 74, died Sunday, May 26, 2002. He had practiced medicine in Arkansas for 41 years. Born on September 23, 1927, in Pine Bluff, he was preceded in death by his parents, the late Walter B. Maupin and Margaret Maupin Cook, and a son, James L. Maupin Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Jolene Byers Maupin; a daughter, Christina Maupin of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Laura Maupin of Arlington, Va; a son, Jim Maupin of Portland, Ore. two grandsons, Bennett and Owen Maupin; three brothers, Toby Heird of Pauley's Island, S. Fred Mauritz, age 53, of Piney drowned in Nimrod Lake near English Landing at 2:30 p. m. Monday. Mauritz, said to have been a good swimmer, was using an inner tube to support himself when he suddenly Slipped from it and did not come back to the top. Eye witness said he apparently had been drinking, and it was believed possible that he suffered a heart attack. Lifetime Wilburton resident, Hazel Jewell Maxwell passed away Wednesday, September 25, at the, Latimer County General Hospital. Mrs. Maxwell was born August 18, 1916 and married Venice Maxwell on April 17, 1937 in Wilburton.
Mr. Maxwell preceded her in death on December 25, 1964.
Surviving Mrs. Maxwell is her daughter Mrs. Velta Crane and son-in-law Benny Crane of Wilburton; her son, Stanley Maxwell of Oklahoma City. Other survivors include four brothers W. W. Cathey, Jeff Cathey and J. R. Cathey of Wilburton and J. W. Cathey of San Leandro, California, also one sister, Lola Lockerby of Wilburton and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred Samuels Maxwell, age 79, of Dardanelle, AR died Sunday, April 2, 2000 at Baptist Medical Center at Little Rock, AR. Born December 19, 1920 to Ad and Esther Samuels, she was a member of First Baptist Church at Dardanelle and a missionary to Germany and Austria for 31 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bernard Samuels; and two sisters, Opal Kelly and Irene Reid.
Survivors include, her husband, Gay lord Maxwell; a stepdaughter, Susan Kell of Atlanta, GA; five brothers, Melbern and Roger Samuels of Wesley, McKinley Samuels of Fayetteville, Vernon Samuels of Paradise, CA and Glynn Samuels of Sunland, CA and two sisters, Gladys Carson and Janice Eaton of Elkins.

Mrs. Bonnie Fay May, age 73, of Danville, AR died Monday, June 2, 1998 at the Dardanelle Nursing Center. She was born December 26, 1924, daughter of the late Luther and Laura Hay good Hancock. She retired after 46 years as a service representative for Yell County Telephone Company in Danville. She was a member of the Spring Creek EH Club, Ranger Free Will Baptist Church Ladies Auxiliary, a Hospice Volunteer, Plainview VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Chambers Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, past member of the Danville Women's B and P W and the Gus Lane Chapter of the Telephone Company Pioneers and a charter member of the Ranger Free Will Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Garland Hancock.
She is survived by her husband, Othel May; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Rhonda May and Mike and Angela May all of Danville; and seven grandchildren, Tiffany, T. J. and Cameron May all of Danville, Ms. Michel May and Michael May both of Russellville, Wendy May and Blake Driver both of Danville.

Dewel Lee May, 87, of Danville, died Monday after a long illness. He was a retired Yell County Juvenile Officer for 28 years, a Charter member of the Arkansas Juvenile Officers Association, Yell County Tri-County Regional Water District Commissioner and past Chairman of the Board, a member of the Danville United Methodist Church, taught youth Sunday School Classes and Bible Classes and was Superintendent of Sunday School for a number of years. A former Boy Scout Scoutmaster in the 50 s, a 4-H leader, a World War II Air Force Veteran and a member of the American Legion.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Oneita Marie Hancock May; son-in-law, Frankie Pyle; brothers, Grady and Othel May and sister, Lorene Sides.

Mr. Fillmore May, age 68, of Dardanelle, AR died Thursday, December 10, 1998 at National Park Medical Center in Hot Springs, AR. He was born March 22, 1930 in Randolph County, AR to the late Louie and Elsie Perm May.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry May and a sister, Mary Nell May.

Mr. Grady L. May, age 71, died Monday, January 10, 1994 at his home in Belleville. He was born August 4, 1922 in Bluffton, Arkansas to the late John L. and Mattie Dona Brand May. He was a retired Rock Island Rail Road employee and a member of the Upper Spring Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

Jeremy L. May, age 29, of Dardanelle, AR was killed in a one vehicle roll-over accident early Monday, April 23, 2007 in Pope County on State Highway 247. May was traveling west on State Hwy. 247 when he failed to negotiate a curve, according to Pope County Coroner L. Krout. He was driving a white Ford F150 and was ejected from the vehicle. May was the son of Rickey May of Belleville and Barbara and Steve Jackson of Dardanelle. He was a graduate of Danville High School. The Russellville Police Department said report is pending.

Jeremy Lynn May, age 29, of Dardanelle, AR died Monday, April 23, 2007 in Russellville, He was born October 8, 1977 in Danville, AR. He is the son of Barbara and Steve Bryant of Dardanelle, AR and Rickey May of Belleville, AR. He was a 1996 graduate of Danville High School, where he excelled in basketball, was active In FFA, SADD and on DHS Times. He was a brick layer for Van Horn Construction.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Grady May and step-grandmother, Vernell Bryant.
He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Leroy and Glenda Jackson of Danville, AR, Bessie May of Belleville, AR, Edward Bryant of the Gilkey community; brother and sister, Josh Bryant of Danville and Jessica Bryant of Kingston community; uncles and aunts, Steve and Vicki Jackson of Dardanelle, Tommy Jackson of Danville, Peggy Mobley and Sandy Melvin Bottoms of Belleville and a host of family, cousins and friends.

Johnny Lee May, age 89 of Danville died Friday, September 27th at the Yell County Hospital. He was a native of the Bluffton community, a retired farmer, the son of the late Jimmy and Marion Johnson May and a member of the Church of Christ.

Mrs. Mattie Brand May, age 92, of Danville, died January 11, 1988 at the Yell County Hospital. She was a native of Montgomery Co., a housewife and mother and the daughter of the late Cy and Elizabeth McConnell Brand.
Survivors include three sons, Dewel May, Othel May and Grady May all of Danville; one daughter, Mrs. Lorrene Sides of Danville; 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Cornwell Funeral Chapel Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with Garland Lipe officiating. Interment will be at the Upper Spring Creek Cemetery. Oneita Marie Hancock May, 82, of Danville passed away on August 9, 2004 at Chambers Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 3, 1922 at Ranger to the late Joe and Ila Bailey Hancock. She was a retired Federal Employee, member of the Methodist Church, longtime member of the Danville BPW, BPW Woman of the Year in 1992, 50 Year member of Extension Homemakers Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and will be remembered for her many Razorback Quilts and a former correspondent for the Yell County Record.
She was preceded in death by son-in-law, Frankie Pyle; brother, Gerald Wade Hancock and sister, Norma Lee Hancock.
Survivors include her husband of over 62 years, Dewel Lee May of Danville, daughter, Patricia May Pyle of Danville; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph Dewel and Judy May of Elk City, OK; two brothers, Everette O. Othel Leo May, age 84 of Danville, AR died Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at Chambers Memorial Hospital. He was born January 20, 1921 in Bluffton, AR to the late John and Mattie "Dona" Brand May. He was a farmer and retired bus driver for the Danville School District. He was a member of the Danville Free Will Baptist Church and a Free Will Baptist Deacon for 54 years, the Plainview VFW and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Hancock May, a brother, Grady May and a sister, Lorene Sides.
Survivors are two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Rhonda May, Mike and Angela May, all of Danville a brother, Dewell May of Danville grandchildren Michel May of Russellville, Michael and Dorinda May of Dardanelle, Tiffany May of Ft. Smith, Wendy May of Springdale, T.J. & Cameron May, and Blake Driver all of Danville great grandchildren, Kari Bewley, Morgan May, and Jarrett May all of Dardanelle.

Mrs. Violet Belle Benefield May, age 97 of Bluffton, AR died Thursday, July 29,1993 at Mitchell Nursing Home in Danville. She was born February 14, 1896 in Bluffton to the late Jack and Elizabeth Stockman Benefield. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors: two daughters, Beatrice Neighbors and Violet "Butterfly" Potter both of Danville; one sister, Dollie Bain of Heavner, OK; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe May and a son, Joseph Leroy May.

Leon Mayberry, age 54 of Rover, died Sunday, January 29, 1989 at McClelland Veterans Administration Hospital in Little Rock. He has served in the U. S. Navy and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Fisher-Law Post 8525.

She was a member of the Ard Church of Christ, housewife, homemaker and member of the Council Oak Extension Homemakers. She was born October 3, 1910 in Delaware, AR to the late William R. and Lilly Boothe Rollans.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odie Mayer and one daughter, Velta Faye Mayer.

James L. Mayer, age 63 of Dardanelle, died Sunday, March 30, 2003 at the Dardanelle Hospital. He was born March 24, 1940 in Danville to the late Oral J. and Eva E. Rollans Mayer. He was a self-employed truck driver, an Army Veteran and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William O. Mayer and O. J. Mayer and one sister, Velta Faye Mayer.
Survivors are his wife of 44 years, Ruby Kendrick Mayer; one son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Sonja Mayer of Atkins, three daughters and son-in-law, Peggy Mayer and LaDonna Mayer, both of Dardanelle, Tammy and Dennis Roper of Dover; two brothers and wives, Denver and Fay Mayer of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Billy Joe and Diane Mayer of Russellville; two sisters and husband, Sandra and Ben Cook of Jonesboro, Georgia, Linda Jackson of Dardanelle; eight grandchildren, Daniel Mayer, Christy, Duston, Brayden and Dyland Johnson, Shawna, Roberta and Chance Anderson; several nephews and nieces; 17 honorary grandchildren.
