James Ira Cowger, 79, civic leader, pharmacist and farmer, who formerly was a teacher and at one time Yell County School Supervisor, died at the clinic here Saturday. After he left the teaching profession, he was in the mercantile business in Gravelly before moving to Danville in 1920. Soon afterwards he opened the Cowger Drug Store. He was a deacon in Danville Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Ophelia Cowger of Danville, he is survived by three sons, Cleo of Danville, J. I. Jr. of Abilene, Texas, and E. L. of Fabens, Texas; four daughters, Mrs. R. C. Parks of Belleville, Miss Vivian Cowger of Danville, Mrs. Roy McNeal of Nimrod and Mrs. R. B. Mills of North Little Rock; a brother, Will of Wyandotte, Mich. and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Hudson of Ft. Smith, Mrs. Fronia Tinsley and Mrs. Lydia Smith of Paris.
Funeral services were conducted in Danville Baptist Church at 2:30p. m. Monday by the Rev. John A. Freeman and the Rev. Charles Finch. Burial was in Danville Cemetery. John P. "Flip" Cowger, age 87 of Dardanelle died Monday, March 1, 2010 at his home. He was born April 18, 1922 at Garden Bottoms to the late John H. and Maude (Limbird) Cowger.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Daisy Elizabeth Walker of Russellville, Edna McKeown of Dardanelle; and his wife Sarah Frances (Bost) Cowger of 65 years from Atkins.
Flip attended Dardanelle Elementary School; graduated from High School at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri and completed one year of college at Wentworth before being drafted as a commissioned Officer for the Army in 1942. Flip transferred from the Infantry to the Army Air Corps and served as a pilot on the B-24 (Liberator) Bomber during World War II. In 1944, on his 21st mission, his plane was shot down over Stuttgart, Germany. He was the only survivor of a crew of ten and became a prisoner of war for seven months in a German Prison Hospital. He suffered a broken back and burns when he parachuted from the burning plane, and later caught pneumonia. He received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with Clusters. Flip received the Pillar of Progress Award in 1982 from the Dardanelle Chamber of Commerce. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as the Grand Marshall of the Christmas Parade in 1983. He was a former President of the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Mt. Nebo Chicken Fry for two years. Flip was a founding member of the Yell County Mounted Patrol where he was Commander for 20 years and was the instigating person for the Rodeo Grounds being built. He received the Fourth Quarter Award from the Dardanelle Sand Lizards Boosters in 1983. He was a farmer, a member of the Dardanelle Methodist Church, Dardanelle Industries, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Dardanelle Hospital Board, Dardanelle Housing Authority, and was a 32nd degree Mason. Flip was the retired director of the State Selective Service System where he worked for 25 years.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip B. and Betty Cowger of Russellville, John W. and Cathey Cowger of El Dorado; four grandchildren, Scarlet Yeager of Conway, Sarah Cowger of Russellville, Alan Cowger and Amber Cowger of El Dorado.
Memorial Service was March 5, 2010 at the Dardanelle United Methodist Church. Naomi Horn Cowger, age 89, of Dardanelle, AR died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the Dardanelle Nursing Center. She was born November 21, 1917 in Belleville, AR a daughter of J. R. (Jimmy) and Ollie Rutledge Horn. She was a homemaker and a member of the Chickalah United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Neil Bowie Cowger; five brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include a son, James W. and Leslie Bowen of Marietta, GA; two daughters, Pat and Keith Finkenbinder of Chickalah, AR and Sharon and Johnny Chiaro of Little Rock, AR; a sister, Dorothy Walters of California; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held June 19, 2007 at the Chickalah United Methodist Church with Bro. Larry Johnson officiating. Mrs. Robert P. Cowger, aged 72, widow of Dr. Robert P. Cowger, died here Sunday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Begoon. Mrs. Cowger was a native of Chickalah and moved to Danville in 1904. She was a member of the Older of the Eastern Star and was a Baptist.

Thelma Gibbs Cowger, 90, of Dardanelle, died Friday, October 23, 2009, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville, Arkansas. She was born October 27, 1918 in Malvern, Arkansas.
She is preceded in death by husband, Jackson K. Cowger; parents, Stella and Grover Gibbs; brothers, Bobby and Lawrence Gibbs; sister, Marquerite Black; and grandson, Clay Long.

Bobby Cox, age 60, of Greenwood, AR, died Sunday, June 22, 1997 at his home. He was retired from Acee-Hiland Dairy and was co-owner of Food Plus Grocery Stores. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, member of the Greenwood Round Up Club, member of the American Brahman Association and was a major supporter of the Junior Livestock Auction of the Sebastian County Fair.
He is survived by his wife, Willo Cox of the home; one daughter, Georgeanna Cox of Rudy, AR; one step-daughter, Sue Carpenter of Ft. Smith; one son, Darren Cox of Greenwood; step-mother, Anna Cox of Greenwood; six sisters, Mary Ann Pitts of Springfield, MO, Betty Reano and Glenda Wallace both of Jenny Lind, AR, Patsy Jones of Ft. Bobby Joe "Bob" Cox, age 68 of Ola departed this Earth to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville. Born November 22, 1937 in Plainview, he was the son of the late Olgar and Lillie Mae Gallion Cox. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ola and a carpenter for 30 years. He assisted in building lock and damns all around the United States, helped build the old Russellville School and the construction of AR Nuclear 1, and was a volunteer ambulance driver for Yell County.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Holbert Cox.
Survivors include four daughters and son-in-law, Donna and Glendon Graham of Mt. George, Dianne Foster and Susan Cavins both of Ola, Bobbie Meredith of Springdale; brother, Billy Cox of Santa Barbara, CA; two sisters, Evola Whitlow of Plainview, Nina Jean Davis of St. Louis, MI; nine grandchildren, Jacquelyn McKern, Nicholas Graham, Dylan Foster, Joshua Foster, Alicia Foster, Nicole Meredith, Kacie Marshall, Ashley Cavins and Matthew Cavins and three great-grandchildren, Emily and Allison Foster and Paris Enriquez; host of nieces and nephews and JoAnn Barnes Marshall, the mother of his children.

Dorothy Maxine Cox, age 64, of Havana, AR died Saturday, April 26, 1997 at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville, AR. She was born in Oklahoma, December 28, 1932 daughter of the late Andrew and Beryl Light Dill. She was a retired housekeeping supervisor for St. Mary's Hospital in Russellville.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Dill and Donald Dill and a sister, Rose Snyder.

Jessie Sims Cox, age 98, of Plainview, AR died Friday, November 19, 2004 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Tandy and Nanny Jones Sims, she was born July 21, 1906 in Ava. She was a homemaker and the retired Postmaster for Steve, AR, where she served for 24 years from 1950 until 1974. She was a member of the Valley Home Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Hollis D. Cox; a son, Earl Cox and a brother, Herbert Sims.

He was born August 22, 1915 in Delaware, AR to the late George Washington Cox, Sr. and Clara Epperson Cox. He was a lumberman and a member of the Delaware First Assembly of God Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee.

Walter Wayne Cox, age 73 of Independence, MO passed away, Sunday, July 9, 2000 at Independence Health Care Center. He was born January 2, 1927 in Kansas City, MO. He was member of the Masonic Christian Lodge 392 of Oak Grove, MO, a lifetime member of VFW Post 340. He retired from the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. He served with the U. S. Army during WWII. He will be truly missed by his family and everyone who knew him.
He is survived by, his wife, Ena E. Darius D. Crabill, age 92, of Decatur, IL died Wednesday, May 16,2001 at Lincoln Manor Nursing Home. He was born March 9, 1909 in Toms Brook, VA, the son of Samuel and Daisy (Bauman) Crabill. He married Lessie Faye Elms in 1939 in Hugo, OK. He was a member of the Decatur Church of the Brethren. He was employed by L. E. Meyers Co. and Illinois Power Co. as a lineman, before retiring in 1971; 60 year member of the I. B. E. W. He was a gentle, happy man, loved by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Daniel L. and Sally of Forsyth, James D. and Jann of Union, IL; grandchildren, Steven and Darla Crabill, Terre Haute, IN, Cynthia and Gary Davis of Decatur, Derek and Daren Crabill of Union, IL; great-grandchild, Cortney; three step great-grandson and two sisters, Amy Green and Mary Forrest both of Ola, AR.

Elva Konkel Crabill, age 100 of Havana, AR died Sunday, December 3, 2000 at Legacy Lodge Nursing Home in Russellville, AR. She was born November 10, 1900 the daughter of the late Henry and Lora Lee Kyles.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Muriel Konkel and J. H. "Jimmy" Crabill and a step son, Jethro Crabill.

Leroy C. Crabill, age 64, of Plainview, AR died Thursday, January 19, 1989 at Beebe, Arkansas. He was a native of Yell County, son of the late Glenn and Nora Lowery Crabill, a retired carpenter and a veteran of the Korean War.

Lessie F. Crabill, age 93, of Decatur, IL, died Saturday, October 5, 2002 in Lincoln Manor Nursing Home. She was born May 24, 1909 in Ola, AR, the daughter of Drewey and Vida Azlea (Adams) Elms. She married Darius D. Crabill on July 4, 1939 in Hugo, OK. She was a member of Decatur Church of the Brethren and a member of Macon County Home Extension. She loved to quilt and raise roses and was a wonderful cook.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darius; four sisters and one brother.
Survivors are her sons, Daniel L. and wife Sally of Forsyth, IL, James D. and wife Jann of Union, IL; grandchildren, Steven Crabill and wife Darla of Terre Haute, IN, Cynthia Davis and husband Gary of Decatur, IL, Derek and Daren Crabill both of Union, IL; great granddaughter, Cortney and three step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Crain was born July 27, 1932 in Centerville, AR to the late Rufus Leonard and Sybil Davenport Walker. She graduated in 1950 from Dardanelle High School as Valedictorian of her class and was an honor graduate from Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA. She was a real estate broker, homemaker, and mother.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, R. L. Walker and Billy Joe Walker.
She is survived by her husband, Jack H. Crain; two sons, Bill R. Crain of Kansas City, MO, Bradley J. Crain of Walnut Creek, CA;, and a daughter, Amanda G. Crain of Oahu, Hawaii; three grandsons, William Crain, Dylan Crain, Jaxon Crain and a granddaughter, Diana Crain.

He attended Plainview-Rover High School and Arkansas State Teachers College at Conway. He was a retired teacher with the Perry-Casa School System. He was a member of the Jesus Name Pentecostal Church of Hollis.

Harley Mitchell Crain, age 80, of Hollis, AR died November 11, 2007 in Yell County, AR. He was born in Hollis to the late Dennis & Lillie Moss Crain on Sept 23, 1927. He had worked as a farmer raising cattle and growing chickens for Tyson Foods, and had also been employed by the U. S. Forestry Service and had worked for Weyerhaeuser. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, singing gospel music and was a member of Hollis Jesus Name Pentecostal Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Opal & Gerald Crain; a sister Gulema Hawks; and three grandsons Rodney Potter, Christopher Crain and Byron Castleberry.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Versee Graves Crain; three sons Harley Jr. & Phyllis Crain, Michael & Mary Crain and Tommy Crain all of Hollis, AR; two daughters Diane & Carl Potter of Aly, AR and Patsy Castleberry of Jessieville; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Jack Henderson Crain, Jr. age 83 of Dardanelle, died Friday, May 15, 2009 at River Valley Medical Center in Dardanelle. Born April 24, 1926 in Carden Bottoms, he was the son of the late Jack Henderson Crain, Sr. and Edna Yates Crain. He was a retired heavy equipment operator.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Frances Ann Walker Crain.
Survivors include two sons, Bill R. Crain and wife, Claire of Kansas City, Missouri, Bradley J. Crain of Paradise, California; daughter, Amanda G.
