Crews, James W

Funeral for James W Crews, aged 58, a timber contractor of Plainview, who was killed Friday in a three-car collision near Jessieville, was at 9 a. m. Monday.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jewel Crews of Plainview; six daughters, Mrs. Mavin Phillips and Mrs. Bonnie Hall of Arlington, Tex. Mrs. Mildred Owens of Hydro, Okla. Mrs. Betty Greenwood of Greenville, Tex. and Mrs. Ernestine Guthrie of Gainesville, Mo. his mother, Mrs. Amanda Hunt of Leachville; two half-brothers, Luther Crews of Oklahoma and Eugene Crews of Leachville; two sisters, Mrs. Millie Merrment of West Plains, Mo. and Mrs. Hattie Lou Bums of Leachville, and 12 grandchildren. Crites, Ida Mullins

Mrs. Ida Mullins Crites, age 74, wife of W. R. Crites of Dardanelle, died last Monday at her home. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Other survivors include three sons, Clarence Crites of Dardanelle, Floyd Crites of Modesto, Calif. and Leland Crites of Winters, Calif. four daughters, Mrs. Olga Smith of Plainview, Mrs. Charlie McClure of Ola, Mrs. Levi Norris of Dardanelle and Mrs. Roy Stone of Dover; three brothers, Elmer, Ed and Ted Mullins of Oklahoma; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Turner of Texas and Mrs. Addie Brown of California; 30 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Crow, Virdel Haston

Mrs. Russell Crow, age 21, of Carden Bottom departed this life April 10, 1949 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Russellville. Mrs. Crow was formerly Miss Virdel Haston.

She is survived by her mother, Mrs. M. J. Brock, of near Dardanelle; four sisters, Mrs. Garrett Dorrough, Paris, Mrs. Robert Crow, Carden Bottom, Mrs. Charles Coal, Cotton Town, Mrs. J. C. Scott of Ola and three brothers, Ivory Haston of Dardanelle, Clinton Haston, Carden Bottom, Nathaniel Haston of Arizona; and a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Crowell, Ernest Thomas

Ernest Thomas Crowell, 61, a native of Waveland, died in a Tulare, Calif., hospital February 20, 1960 following a long illness. He was a farmer and had lived in Porterville, Calif., for the past 18 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Crowell of Porterville; three sons, Edward, Curtis and Lyndon Crowell, a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Lewis, and two brothers, Robert and Lonnie Crowell, all of Porterville; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Nelms of Modesto, Calif., and Mrs. Ruth James of Waveland; and eight grandchildren. Effie Crownover, age 81, died August 12 at the State Sanatorium. She was a resident of Belleville and had lived most of her life in Yell County.

Crownover, Henry Grady

Henry Grady Crownover, age 57, died in a hospital in Long Beach, California, Friday morning, January 6th, 1950 after an illness of several weeks.

Sidney Crownover was born Sept 26, 1910, near Belleville and died December 14, 1950, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was the son of the late W. O. Crownover and Mrs. Nettie Crownover, who now lives in Norman, Okla.

Cubat, John

John Cubat, 71, of Dardanelle, died in a Russellville hospital Sunday, and funeral services were conducted in Brearley Cemetery at 3 p. m. on Monday by the Rev. John Mans. A native of Czechoslovakia, he was a farmer here.

Mrs. David Cumbie, age 79, passed away at her home in Ft Worth, Tex. Saturday, January 5.

Cumbie, David Franklin

David Franklin Cumbie, aged 91, of Ft. Worth, Texas died January 7 in a Ft. Worth hospital. He was a native of Alabama and for many years was a resident of Yell County. He was a retired cabinet maker and a Baptist.

Survivors include a son, Earnest Cumbie; a daughter Inez Cumbie, and grandson, Leland Cumbie, all of Ft. Worth; one granddaughter, Mrs. LeRoy Morgan of Yucaipa, Calf; one sister, Mrs. J. P. Dale, Olive Viola Strait

Mrs. Olive Viola Strait Dale, age 86 years, died at her home in Centerville, September 7, 1954. Mrs. Dale was a daughter of the late P. N. and Olive Whatley Strait, early settlers of Yell County and had lived here her entire life.

Survivors are four sons, Cecil Dale, Danville, Hillie Dale, Centerville, Earnest Dale, Ola and L. P. Dale of Holderville, Okla.; one daughter, Mrs. Ellen Sandlin, Ola; two sisters, Mrs. Huldie George and Mrs. Rusha Petillo, both of Centerville; one brother, Claud Strait, Orlando, Fla.; and Booker Strait of Ola, 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Daniel, James R,

Funeral service will be held Sunday, October 31, at the Bluffton at Methodist church 2:00 p. m. for James R, Daniel, whose body has been returned from overseas for burial.

Services will be conducted by Rev. Connell of Conway, assisted by Rev. Tom Kinslow, former pastor of the Bluffton church. Military services will be conducted by the Danville American Legion. James Robert Daniel, better known as Jim Bob, was born at Ola, October 23, 1925. He received his first schooling at Danville where he lived with his family during the years of 1930 and 1933. He finished high school at Fourche Valley High as an honor student of the class of 44.

On June 24th of that year he listed for military training which he received at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Active duty began immediately on arriving in France on December 8th, being placed in the noted 36th Division of the Seventh Army. On December 16th he was entered on the first line and on Christmas Day he went into active duty in the battle of the Belgian Bulge. On March 7 he was wounded in his right hand for which he received the Purple Heart. The next thirty days, including Easter Sunday, April7, he spent in a hospital. He had been re-united with his 141st Inf. only a few days when he was killed in action on April 30th - Just eight days before the fall of Germany - and was awarded the Purple Heart medal posthumously for heroic action in service.

Davidson, Walter

Walter Davidson, former manager of the Long Bell Lumber Company of Muskogee, died in the Veterans Hospital in Fayetteville on April 27, 1954. He had suffered a heart attack in September 1953, and had been hospitalized since that time. Davidson was born in Yell County and formerly taught school here. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Davidson, pioneer residents of Yell County.

Ellis R. Davis, age 45, of Chowchilla, California passed away at his home March 3, 1948. He died of a heart attack.

Mrs. Ida Ann Davis, age 72, died at Mt. George August 20, 1954 of the home of a daughter, Mrs. Fred George. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Davis, Jim

Carden Bottom Man Charged With Murder Jim Davis, 54, of Russellville, was killed by a shotgun blast in a Carden Bottom home on Sunday. Officer investigating the murder were deputy sheriff, Leslie Thone, Sherrif Herman McCormick and Deputy Sheriff James Hodges.

Killed By Truck After Visit Here - Mrs. Maudella Davis of Sallisaw, Okla. was killed by a truck, Monday evening shortly after she arrived home after a visit in Yell County. Mrs. Davis, together with her daughter, Mrs. Autry Salyer, and family of Tulsa, had been visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. D. Davis, Mrs. Jimmie E.

Former Danville Resident Dies In Arizona head - on Collision - Mrs. Jimmie E. Davis, age 43, formerly of Danville, was killed Monday in an automobile accident near Peach Springs, Ariz.

The following account of the accident was received from the sheriff's office at Kingman, Ariz. The time of the accident was approximately 9 p. m. Mrs. Davis was traveling west on Highway 66 west of Peach Springs. She passed a truck slightly exceeding the speed limit, rounded a minor curve and met a vehicle traveling partly on her side of the highway. She applied her brakes and slid across the center line, colliding head on with the oncoming vehicle. The other car was occupied with four males who were drinking heavily. One of them was killed and three hospitalized.

Mrs. Davis was enroute to her home in Los Angeles after a visit here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Howard. She was born in Danville and was a 1932 graduate of Danville High School.

She is survived, in addition to her parents, by one sister, Reba Howard of Trona, Calif.; four step-sisters, Mrs. J. W. Hefner of New Orleans, Mrs. Treiba Allen of Houston, Mrs. Ima DeWitt and Mrs. Juanell Jacquemine of Little Rock. Her funeral was in Danville. Davis, Sarah Ida Holliman

Mrs. Sarah Ida Holliman Davis was born February 3, 1872 in Johnson County, Alabama, and died April 20, 1958, at the age of 86 years. She moved with her parents to Arkansas when she was 11 years old. She was married to William N. Davis in the year of 1892. To this union, nine children were born.

Two preceded her in death, an infant and a son, Jonathan "Dick" Davis; also her husband, William N. Davis.

Survivors include four sons, George Davis, William Davis, Joe Davis and Hoyt Davis all of Waveland; three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Tapp of Havana. Mrs. Dona Ross of Waveland, and Mrs. George Tennis of Stockton, Calif; 30 grandchildren 38 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mada Springfield of Wewoka, Okla. and Mrs. India Spears, Oklahoma City. Miss Blanch Deese, age 75, died in a Little Rock hospital November 5, 1954 after a long illness. She was born in North Carolina the daughter of the late Levi and Francis Deese and came to Arkansas in 1911. She had been a member of the Baptist Church about 60 years.

Delay, Ray O.

Man Killed In Wreck Near Here - Ray O. Delay, age 56, of Laredo, Texas died of injuries received in a head-on collision near Danville Tuesday afternoon. His son, Bill Delay, 20, driver of the car and Bob Woods, 65, driver of the other car, were both injured. Woods critically. Bill Delay is a student at Arkansas Tech and Woods lives at Chickalah. The wreck happened about 4:30 p. m. about four miles north of Danville on Highway 27. State Trooper Dick Keathley said Woods was attempting to pass three trucks when the accident occurred. The Delays were driving towards Danville from Russellville. The impact, which drove the front end of both cars nearly back into the dashboards happened on Delay's side of the road. Ray Delay, after treatment at the hospital in Danville was taken to Baptist Hospital in Little Rock for brain surgery. He died soon after arriving there. Bill Delay is in the hospital at Danville, where his condition is satisfactory. He suffered face and head cuts, an injured nose and cuts to one leg. Woods was taken to the hospital at Russellville, where it was reported that he had both legs broken, one arm broken, head wounds, and a punctured lung. His condition was listed as critical Wednesday night.

Delay is survived by his wife, who was visiting in Louisiana at the time of the accident, two other sons, Charles, who owns a farm in Yell County and now lives in Venezuela, and Jerry of Harlingen, Texas. Denton, John Laymon

John Laymon Denton, age 51, died at the City Hospital in Sapulpa, Okla. on December 15, 1956. He was born at Danville and spent his early life in Yell County attending schools in Dutch Creek and Belleville. He united with the Methodist Church in Belleville at an early age. He also was a Mason. He was married to Miss Ruby Fergeson of Belleville in 1925, both of them teaching schools near Belleville until they moved to Oklahoma in 1928.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Bob Bradley of California and Jerry Sue of the home in Sapulpa; a son John Charles of the home; his mother, Mrs. Cora Denton of Hobart, Okla. three brothers, Bunkey of Hobart, Delta and Carlos of California; six sisters, Mrs. Joanna Brock and Mrs. Ura Cagle of California, Mrs. Jewell Foster and Mrs. Charles Thacker of Danville, Mrs. Alta Oakley of Muskogee, Okla. and Mrs. Sibyl Pruitt of Norman, Okla., and two grandchildren. Dickinson, Henry

Henry Dickinson, age 81, died June 26, 1956 of a heart attack at his home near Ola. Mr. Dickinson or Uncle Henry as he was better know, was born at Ragland, Ala, and came with his parents to Arkansas at an early age. He had lived in Yell County for more than 60 years and had been active on his farm, located about 7 miles west of Ola, for 58 years. He had continued farming up until his death, although he had been suffering from a heart ailment for the past year.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lydia Dickinson; one daughter, Mrs. Eunice Fox of Tulsa; three brothers, J. Q. of Panama, Okla. Sidney of Dallas, Texas and Hubert of Durant, Okla.; two sisters, Mrs. Bert Litker of Ola Rt. and Mrs. Herschel Ryan of Brookston, Texas. Wilbur Davis Dickson, 74, died April 7, 1959 at the Yell County Hospital. He was a retired farmer and a Presbyterian.

Mrs. Edith Gertrude Dillman, 59 died at her home near Waveland, Wednesday, May 28, 1954. She had lived in the Waveland community about four years and was a member of the Baptist Church.

L. J. (Lewis) Dishongh, age 78, of Gravelly died at his home on Saturday, September 10 1955. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Mulberry and had served as clerk and deacon for many years.

Miss Pearl Dixon, age 76, of Havana, died March 8 in the Yell County Hospital after a short illness. She was a native of Atkins, but had spent most of her life in Yell County.

Dooley, Isabelle

Aged Woman Burns in Belleville Fire...Miss Isabelle Dooley, age around 75, burned to death in her home about one-half mile west of Belleville on Highway 10 last night around 10:00 p.m. according to information received from Sheriff Earl Ladd.

Will George, who had lived with Miss Dooley and her sister now deceased, for the past 15 or 20 years, said that a lamp apparently exploded and when he threw water on the flames, it spread the fire. He got Miss Dooley onto the front porch and went to the well for another bucket of water, telling her to get further away. On returning she was not to be found and the house collapsed in flames soon after. Her body was found in the remains of the house after the fire died down.

Rufus Horn and Gloyd Buckman and Mrs. Buckman, neighbors, reported hearing screams and seeing both Miss Dooley and Mr. George on the porch. By the time they had arrived at the scene, Miss Dooley had gone into the house and they were unable to rescue her. Doster, Wynema

Former Danville Resident Dies In Accident - Mrs. Wynema Doster, 29, formerly of Danville, was killed in a car accident at Havana about 10:00 a. m. last Sunday, April 8, 1956. Charles Doster, her husband, was driving their car and received facial cuts and bruises. Two of their four children, who were also in the car, were injured. Charles Jr., age 2, was riding in the front seat and received minor injuries. He was hospitalized at Danville. Sandra Kay, 5, received head injuries. The Dosters were taking Sandra to Booneville. Sandra was transferred to Booneville and then on to a Ft. Smith Hospital where her condition is reported improving. Two offer daughters, Patricia Charlett, 9, and Iris Darlette, 7, were hot hurt. Troy Yandell of Havana, driver of the other car, was not seriously injured. The accident was investigated by State Policemen Dickie Keathley. The two vehicles struck almost head on Highway 10. Mrs. Doster is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Bell of Danville, one sister Mary Deanna of the home and one brother, Bartley Bell of Danville. Rev. A former Yell County man, Thad Downen, age 71, of Sheridan died near England, Sunday October 12, 1958 in an automobile accident. Mr. Downen was a retired farmer and rancher and a member of the Pentecostal Church.

DuPuy, Jerrell

Little Rock Boy Killed in Auto Accident at Ola - Jerrell DuPuy of Little Rock was killed about10:45 Saturday night, May 22, 1948, when the car he was driving overturned on Hwy. No. 9 near Ola. When the car overturned the door came open and DuPuy was thrown out and was crushed under the car. DuPuy, with three other youth had been fishing at Lake Nimrod and were returning to Ola for supplies when the accident occurred. The other occupants of the car were not injured. William Earl Elliott, Sr., age 61, died at the home of his son, William Earl Elliott, Jr. in Tai-tan, New Mex. on January 28, 1959. Ellis, Henry

Henry Ellis, a native of Yell County and former resident of Ola, Route1 East, was born July 2, 1889, the youngest son of George and Belle Ellis, and passed away September 7, 1948 in San Bernardino, California, where he had been residing the past three years. He was married to Miss Alta Boyce in 1909, who preceded him in death sixteen years ago.

He is survived by four daughters, Mmes. Ernest Condley of Trona, Calif. Robert Snow, Newton Harvey and Wesley Mossberg of San Bernardino; two sons, J. D. Ellis and Joe Henry Ellis, both of Dan Bernardino; a sister, Mrs. Neoma Myers, Ola and a brother, Jeff Ellis of Dardanelle.
