Herbert Havner, carpenter from Danville who was working in the nearby home, narrowly escaped death when he was prevented from grabbing the wire by O. H. Kays, who was working with him. Mr. Havner said he became excited when Mr. Buckman shouted to them and when he saw the flames, and he rushed toward Mr. Apple with the intentions of jerking the wire away from the high-line. Mr. Apple said Gloyd Buckman, also of Belleville, who were partners in the well-drilling business, had raised the derrick securing the guy wires. The top of the rig was higher than the high line and reportedly within three or four feet of it.
