Actor Who Stayed Behind Beard for 45 Years Dies
Arthur Hunnicutt, who "hid behind my beard" through 30 pictures and 25 Broadway plays spanning 45 years, died Wednesday at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital. He was 69 and had cancer.
Hunnicutt who boasted he last shaved in 1918 first drew critical acclaim in the 1930s in William Saroyan's play "Love's Old Sweet Song." The star of that production was Walter Huston, who advised Hunnicutt never to accept a role "if you ain t part of the plot. Because if you are, they can t leave you out". The gravel voiced actor said that was the only advice he followed when he came to Hollywood and accepted a one-picture-a-year contract from Howard Hawks.
"I never was too-fussy, what, that picture was about" he told retired Times film critic Philip K. Scheuer in 1952 "just so I was IN it". Hunnicutt who s most recent country-style roles were in the Academy Award-wining movies "Cat Ballou" and "Harry and Tonto" was born in Arkansas and raised on a farm. And although he never succeeded in losing his Arkansas drawl, his acting abilities were such that he once portrayed Julius Caesar off Broadway.
Called the male Marjorie Main by writers and critics, he made his movie debut in 1942 in "Wildcat" and followed that with a series of Westerns and Civil War pictures that included "Broken Arrow", "The Red Badge of Courage" and "The Big Sky". He was the grizzled frontiersman who led Gary Cooper's troopers through the Florida swamp in "Distant Drums" and the hard-bitten Revolutionary War leader in Wall Disney's "Swamp Fox" television series. His last major role before he fell ill in 1974 was as the cat seller in "Harry and Tonto". His other film credits included "Pinky" "The Million Dollar Duck" and "El Dorado".
He leaves his wife, Pauline, of Los Angeles.
Services were held Friday at Old North Church, Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills.
Pictures include in Obit were "Hunnicutt in Bonanza, 1970" and picture of Arthur Hunnicutt and Gary Cooper in "Distant Drums." 1952. Born: Feb 17, 1919; Died Sept 26, 1979, Burial Sept 28, 1979. (Submitted by: Patsy Gatliff, Newspaper: Los Angeles Times; 10/1/1979)
Arthur Hunnicutt, Actor, Former Yell Countian Dies In California At age 68
Arthur Hunnicutt, a native of Gravelly, known as one of the best character Hollywood actors, died last Wednesday at the age of 68 after a long illness. Known for his unmistakably shaggy beard he grew in the 1950's, Hunnicutt became well known for his country-style parts he played in Academy Award-winning movies, "Cat Ballou" and "Harry and Tonto".
He and his brothers were raised at Gravelly at the northeast border of Yell County. Hunnicutt attended school at Gravelly and came back there to teach after he completed his college degree, where he met his wife, Pauline, who also was a teacher at the school. He died at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California where he had been a patient since August 1978, a hospital spokesman said.
Born in 1911 in Gravelly, Hunnicutt graduated from Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas at Conway) and made his movie debut in 1942 with a role in "Wildcat." In the 1950s, he appeared in a series of Westerns and Civil War movies, including "Broken Arrow," "The Red Badge of Courage" and "The Big Sky." Specializing in slow-speaking country characters, Hunnicutt established a solid career throughout the '60s and early '70s before he fell ill in 1974. Besides his role as the cat seller in "Harry and Tonto," a story about an old man and a cat that won an Oscar for Art Carney in 1974, Hunnicutt also appeared in "Cat Ballou," a spoof Western that won an Oscar for Lee Marvin in 1965. He appeared with John Wayne, who also died of cancer earlier this year, in "El Dorado" in 1967. In 1971, Hunnicutt appeared in the Walt Disney movie, "Million Dollar Duck," and was cast in "The Revengers" a year later. Most recently he appeared on Broadway in "Love's Old Sweet Song."
