Former funeral home owner, water commissioner dies
GLENWOOD - A longtime Glenwood businessman and civic leader died December 26. Marlin C. Davis, age 91, and his wife, Louise, bought the local funeral home in 1946 and operated Davis Funeral Home for 43 years before his retirement in 1989. Many residents remember him as the Water Commissioner for the city, a job he assumed out of necessity. Few could remember exactly when Davis took over the city water department. Businessman John Plyler said he believed Davis took over the water department in the late 1950s or early 1960s. For years Davis kept the records and oversaw the operations of the department with Floyd Oliver as superintendent. Davis was dedicated to holding down water rates for city residents, and maintained that stance all the way until he left as water commissioner in the mid-1980s. He was also a leader in business. He operated Davis Funeral Home from 1946 until 1989 and was one of the original founders of Selected Funeral and Life Insurance Company. Davis, the late Hoss Murry and the late Richard Billingsley were the original group of three that formed the company. The word "Selected" was adopted because each of the original 20 funeral homes were "selected" to be part of the company. He served on the Board of Directors and later as advisory director. He was named Chairman Emeritus on the Board of Directors for the company after his retirement Davis was also president of the Glenwood Cemetery Association for many years. He was a member of the Glenwood Masonic Lodge 662 where he received his 50 year pin. He was also a member of the Buffalo Gap Masonic Lodge 484. He married Bessie Louise Gibbs in 1932. He served in the U. S. Navy in World War II.
