Gossage, Dewey

Longtime Postal Carrier, Dewey Gossage, Dies He drove somewhere between 1. 5 million and 2. 25 million miles on the same postal route for over one-half century (55 years) delivering literally hundreds of thousands of pieces of mail to thousands of households down through his tenure before he retired at the age of 87. Dewey Gossage, 93, of Plainview, died on February 18th. (complete obit page 9) Although it cannot be accurately calculated because his miles on his route changed many times over the years, Gossage drove a minimum of one and a half million miles during his 55 years, but, if you calculate an average of what he was driving when he retired and an average of the miles when he began (and in between), it could very well be that he drove up to 2. 25 million miles on his postal route. And he only drove Ford trucks.

After a two-month tour of duty during World War II, the war ended, and Gossage, whose military job had been handling mail call, returned to Plainview. In 1947, Gossage bid on the "Star Route" and received the contract that he maintained until July 2002.

He was born and raised on South Fourche in southern Yell County. He has been a member of Plainview Masonic Lodge No. 641 for 69 years.

100 Mail Boxes, 7 Post Offices In the beginning there were about 100 boxes with seven post offices including Nimrod, Aplin, Hollis, Steve, Onyx, Aly, and Plainview. Gas was 19 cents a gallon, and the route was about 130 miles per day. Gossage said "There have been seven postmasters in Plainview during the 55 years he carried the mail Ola Garner, J. D. Taylor, Floy Barton, Tom Miller, Cherry Turner, Tara Hood, and now Bud Masterson.

Milked Cows, Delivered Alligators Some of the most unusual experiences were when he stopped to milk a cow for a family on vacation, when he found a sack containing a black snake in a mailbox, and when he delivered an alligator to a lady who was rather provoked at the sender of the creature. Dewey has seen four bears, up to 25-30 deer in one day, and lots of turkeys and squirrels. Hawkins Now Has Route Marty Hawkins, substitute mail carrier for Gossage, received the contract on what is now the "Highway contract 68, or HC 68 Route, and continues the 130-mile route.

Lisa Gay, Human Resources Director for the Postal Service in Conway, said of Dewey upon his retirement, "He's always there. It's like he never got sick. I think the man is indestructible. " Scott Blake, former Plainview OIC, said "He's a hero. His record is simply inapproachable. " "Dewey Gossage personified the United States Postal Service.
