Hudgins, Harvey

Gas Line Construction worker Electrocuted Near Danville- Harvey Hudgins, age 23, of Russellville was electrocuted Monday, while working on the natural gas transmission line about six miles east of Danville on Highway 10. Hudgins was working for Arkansas Louisiana Gas Co. The accident happened just before noon. Hudgins was working with a crew unloading pipe and laying it alongside a ditch where it was to be welded together by crews following them. Workers who witnessed the accident said Hudgins disconnected one end of a crane cable from a pipe that had been unloaded and was turning to signal the pipe truck that they were ready for another joint. He had hold of a rope at the end of the cable with his right hand but apparently when he turned his left hand touched the cable and he was knocked to the ground by the 13, 000-volt charge. W. C. McDaniel, operator of the crane, said he was moving the crane out from under the power lines, saw the flash of electricity and jerked the crane clear of the lines. He said the crane only touched the power line for a fraction of a second. Hudgins had a small burn on one finger of his left hand and small burn on the bottom of his left foot. The grass caught fire where he was standing, but was extinguished quickly. Fellow workers started giving Hudgins artificial respiration and then took him to the hospital in Danville. Men from the Arkansas Power and Light Co. took turns giving artificial respiration for a period of three hours, but he failed to revive.

Hudgins parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hudgins, now live at Earlimart, Calif, and formerly lived at Centerville; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hudgins, live at Centerville.
