Dr. James O. Fergeson, age 84, of Sarasota, Florida, formally of Havana died July 11, 2007 in Sarasota, Florida. Dr. Fergeson was born in Havana, AR, March 8, 1923. He grew up in Yell County, graduated from Danville High School, Arkansas Tech at Russellville, and from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine. He served as a Flight Surgeon during WWII. After the war he went on to do a five year residency in general, thoracic, and vascular surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he became a first assistant to Dr. Charles Mayo. He and his wife and son moved to Sarasota in 1956 where he practiced for more than 30 years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Priestly Society, the Mayo Alumni Foundation, the University of Arkansas School of Medicine Alumni Association. Outside of medicine his interests included horses, golf, hunting, traveling, and music. After retirement he taught himself to play the violin and loved to attend fiddling events. As a youth in Danville he loved playing the guitar with friends. Until he could no longer ride, he was never without a horse. As a child at Havana he had a Shetland pony, and in Danville he delivered newspapers on a horse and loved riding with friends. He was a frequent competitor in the Missouri Fox Trotter Division and in the Florida State Fair. His son Jay said his father was proud of the fact that he made the cover of the Mayo Clinic's Alumni magazine several years ago. However, the article was not about his thirty years as a surgeon. The magazine focused on his Christmas tree farm in North Carolina. Dad said, "After all the thousands of operations I did, it took growing Christmas trees to get on the cover of the Mayo magazine, his son recalled with a chuckle. Devoted to his family, friends, and patients, Jim will be missed by all who knew him. The world is a much better place for his having been here. As a member of the Danville United Methodist Church, he always loved visiting the church and being friends when he was in Danville.

Ferguson was a native of Bluffton. Officers from the Yell County Sheriff s Department and Yell County Mounted Patrol located Fergusons body, which will be submitted to the Arkansas State Medical Examiners Office for determination of cause of death.
Officers had responded to the area to conduct a more thorough search, and located Fergusons body not far from the location where the victims family had found Fergusons vehicle late last week.
