Chastain, Tom

14 Year Old Boy On School Outing Drowns At Spring Lake - A 14 year old boy drowned in Spring Lake Wednesday, afternoon while on a school outing. A coroner s jury, made of 16 men empanelled by Coroner Glenn Bailey, last night returned a verdict of death at about 4:30 p. m. by reason of accidental drowning. The victim, Tom Chastain, was one of 24 boys on an outing from County Line School with their sponsor, Bennie Rausch, agriculture instructor. Rausch said that the boy had not planned on swimming and had not brought a suit with him. He said that he counted the boys who were supposed to swim and counted them a number of times, including when they got out. Several of the boys said they knew that Tom rented a bathing suit and had seen him diving off a pier. They did not believe that he was able to swim. He was not missed until the boys prepared to eat and make camp. His body was found about 6:40 p. m. in water about 10 feet deep and about midway between the two piers in the swimming area. Charles Ray of Russellville recovered the body about 10 minutes after the search for the body was started. Ray, who had a first class swimmer rating in the Army, said he did not attempt artificial respiration because he could tell that the boy had been in the water too long. The boy s parents are Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Chastain of Branch. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, YELL COUNTY RECORD. 50 Years Ago, Danville, Arkansas - Originally published on Thursday, May 14, 1959)
